The Championship's Grass Roots
Wimbledon wasn't always the big, flashy tennis event it is today... The Championships originally included Men's Singles only and were governed by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Did they envisage the high-profiles, massive sponsorship deals and electronic referees we have today? Probably not.
It all kicked off in 1877 as a Men's only single event. Seven years later, ladies joined the party but although the men were allowed to play doubles, the women had to stick to singles. In 1913 both Ladies and Mixed Doubles were added. As for the history of actual British winners? Well, let's steer clear of that topic - maybe this year will mark the end the UK winners drought.
